Male Infertility

There can be many causes of male infertility and therefore, Vitalab takes a systematic approach to find the diagnosis. A male constantly renews his supply of sperm cells and a single ejaculation of semen may contain as many as 200 million individual sperm cells. A sperm count of 20 million per millilitre is considered normal for fertilisation. Male infertility can fall into one or two categories: productive or obstructive. Production problems stem from congenital problems with the testicles, hormone issues or cancer. Obstructive complications weaken the transport of sperm to the semen.

Causes of Male Infertility:

•  Low sperm count
•  Poor sperm motility
•  Hormone problems
•  Varicocele
•  Genetic defect
•  Infection
•  Testicular trauma hormonal imbalance
•  Blockage of seminal vesicles

A diagnosis will be made once the doctor has reviewed your full medical history and a semen analysis has been conducted. If the analysis is normal the doctor may want to check for hormonal imbalance and genetic defects.

There are many treatment options available for male infertility. If it is a structural problem surgery may be the best option. If the reason for infertility is unknown, the doctor may recommend intrauterine insemination (IUI), in vitro fertilisation (IVF), or IVF with intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) where a signal healthy sperm is injected to fertilise an egg.
