Penile vibratory stimulation
As a simple and non-invasive procedure penile vibration is widely used as an office or home procedure to obtain semen in patients who, in a normal situation, cannot ejaculate. Vibration applied to the penis was first used in anorgasmia to obtain semen, and it may be equally applied as a help in infertility cases, for instance, due to retarded ejaculation.
Vibration has been tested for validity by acknowledged authorities in the field of infertility due to spinal cord lesions or injury
In recent years, patients with spinal cord injuries have benefited from vibration in order to collect semen. It is now common to induce ejaculation at regular intervals after the injury to ensure continuous normal sperm production so that normal fertility capacity can be preserved.
Vibration at 80 Hz or at higher frequencies is used to induce ejaculation. This may occur without an erection. The time necessary to provoke the reflex is usually less than three minutes, but may take as long as 20 minutes.
To induce ejaculation in patients with spinal cord injuries the patient lies supine. The plate of the vibrator is placed against the lower surface of the glans. Vibration is applied in continued five-minute cycles (3.5 min. Vibration, 1.5min pause) until ejaculation occurs.
Please note that this procedure should only be performed by specialists who are familiar with this technique.
